• Visual examination of the sample

• Stereo microscopy to inspect surfaces and fracture features

• Polarized light microscopy to examine thin sections of the material

• High-resolution photography and photomicrographs

• Sometimes supplemental testing such as chemical analysis or scanning electron microscopy (SEM)
