Petrography

Petrographic Examination of Aggregates – ASTM C295

Our experienced team of professional geologists, petrographers and engineers performs aggregate petrography in accordance with ASTM C295 to evaluate the physical, mineralogical and chemical properties of aggregates.

Our petrography laboratory combines high-magnification imaging with advanced laser-based elemental analysis to examine carefully selected, representative aggregate particles. Thin sections can also be examined at high magnification using polarized light microscopy (PLM) to evaluate aggregate composition and identify potentially deleterious constituents.

What Does Aggregate Petrography Evaluate?

Aggregate Petrography identifies composition, quality and potentially deleterious constituents that may affect durability, suitability and performance in concrete. Common evaluations we perform include:

  • Alkali-Silica Reactivity (ASR) Potential
  • Alkali-Carbonate Reactivity (ACR) Potential
  • Aggregate Lithology (Rock Type)
  • Durability
  • Staining Potential
  • Rock Core Petrography
  • Quarry Approvals
  • Mica Content
  • Quality
  • Water Demand Effects
  • Pyrrhotite Content

What Questions Can Aggregate Petrography Answer?

  • Can my aggregate be safely used in concrete?
  • Will this aggregate cause staining or pop outs?
  • Could this aggregate cause the same problems seen in the deteriorating home foundations in Connecticut?
